Is Your Mare a Good Candidate for Frozen Semen? |
Some things to consider |
Is your mare a proven broodmare that is easy to settle? Then she is the very best candidate for frozen semen. Maiden mares can be bred with frozen, too. |
Does your reproductive vet have experience and a proven track record using frozen semen? If not, is there a vet near you who does? |
Does your reproductive vet have the facilities and staff to monitor your mare for the optimum timing of insemination? This just makes life easier for everyone. |
Are you willing to take the necessary steps required for increased mare management? This includes additional ultrasounds to help pinpoint the best timing for insemination (one dose of semen within 12 hours before ovulation; one dose of semen within 6 hours after ovulation). |
Do you have the patience and determination? Using frozen semen could require up to three cycles to settle a mare because of all the variables: the stress of freezing and thawing on the semen; the vet's preparation of the frozen semen for insemination; timing of the insemination; the mare's reproductive response to the insemination. |
Are you willing to start working with your repro vet early in the year to ensure that your mare is in optimum breeding health and ready to begin breeding with frozen semen in the spring, so she has the best chance to settle? |
The Colorado State University (CSU) Equine Reproduction Lab collects, prepares, freezes and stores *Smaragaid Cliff's semen in its USDA-approved, commercial-quality facility. CSU's equine reproductive experts are happy to answer any of your vet's questions about breeding your mare with frozen semen. |
*Smaragaid Cliff's Breeding Contract for Frozen Semen |
To breed a mare to *Smaragaid Cliff with frozen semen, the contract requires: |
-- a pre-payment of $200.00 when frozen semen is ordered. This covers the cost of two doses ($75) as well as CSU's fee for the preparation, packing and rental of the shipping container ($125). The cost of shipping is the responsibility of the mare owner. |
-- a final payment of $600.00 (Cliff's stud fee for frozen semen) when the foal is born. |
Why tell you all this? We want you to be a knowledgeable consumer when you choose frozen semen. Be sure to talk to your qualified equine reproduction expert for more specific information as it relates to breeding your mare with frozen semen. |
